A smart stable – also known as an enriched living environment – is an innovative way to give horses more freedom of choice, autonomy and mental stimulation.
Of course, it doesn’t have to be a stable: it can also be a Smart Paddock, a Smart Shelter, a Smart Paddock Paradise or a Smart Pasture!

More than shelter: a voice for your horse
We’re used to it: when we get home, we turn on the lights. We open a window if we want fresh air, adjust the heat when it’s cold, and put on our favourite music or turn on the TV. Small actions, but they make a big difference in how we feel: safe, comfortable, in control.
But what if you’re a horse?
And everything around you just happens to you, without any say?
At Equithink, we believe that can – and should – be different.
What is a smart stable?
A smart stable is an enriched environment where horses can control parts of their surroundings themselves. Think of buttons or sensors that allow a horse to turn on lights, a fan or nebuliser, start the radio or activate a puzzle. Technology, yes – but not to control the horse. To give the horse control.
Control over what happens around him.
Control over what he wants to do and when.
Control over what he needs in that moment.
And that is exactly what Equithink is all about: empowering horses with choice, agency and cognitive engagement – instead of letting everything simply happen to them.
Why is having choice and control so important for your horse?
When a horse can initiate something on his own, his role changes.
He becomes a participant instead of a passive observer.
He joins in, instead of merely enduring what is happens to him.
That sense of agency isn’t a luxury – it’s a basic need. Just as it is for us.
Without choice, there’s no true cooperation.
Without control, there’s no trust, no safety.
Even small choices – like pressing a button to start music – contribute to that sense of: I matter. I have influence. I am heard.
How does this fit with Equithink?
At Equithink, we guide horses step by step toward more autonomy and clearer communication.
We design puzzles and learning paths that build on their natural curiosity and their ability to think independently, learn and make choices.
Our puzzles are more than just toys. They’re tools to develop fine motor skills, concentration, confidence and cognitive capacity – and they lay the foundation for something bigger: the ability to communicate with us in a meaningful way.
How we got the idea
It started with Plato, one of our horses with asthma, who needs regular nebulisation with a saline solution. We asked ourselves: what if he could tell us when he needs it?
What if he could decide for himself how often and how long?
So we built a first prototype of the nebuliser stall: a setup where Plato can press a button to activate the device – at his own pace, as often and as long as he wants.
And he did. Intentionally, voluntarily and exactly when he needed it.
That experience changed everything.
If a horse can take the lead in medical care, what else might he be capable of?
That’s how the idea of the smart stable was born: an environment where horses can influence what happens around them – from puzzles to music, from lights to air flow.
It’s a simple yet powerful way to give horses more control over their lives.
