Exploring how horses learn, think and interact with their world

Horses are constantly learning from the world around them. From the objects they investigate and the problems they solve to the choices they make and the responses they receive from us, every experience can become part of their learning history.

At Equithink, we are interested in what happens when we deliberately create more opportunities for horses to explore, make choices, solve problems and influence their environment. What skills can they develop? How does greater agency contribute to their welfare? And what might become possible when horses are given increasingly rich learning experiences over many years?

Here we explore the science and ideas behind our work, alongside practical ways to bring them into your horse’s daily life. You’ll find articles about enrichment, cognition and learning, agency and welfare, responsive environments, communication, and the projects through which we are exploring these questions with horses.
